Macedonians living in the New York metro area gathered on Sunday in front of the Trump Tower on 5th Avenue to express their support for the President elect Donald Trump. At the rally, a proclamation was read that called for an end to the support which the outgoing Obama administration gave to left wing organizations in Macedonia, primarily to the George Soros funded Open Society Foundation.
“Dear President Trump, we, the Americans with Macedonian heritage, congratulate you on your election. Our native country Macedonia needs your help. We ask you to protect Macedonia and Macedonian democracy from the Soros Foundation (FOSIM). Using US taxpayers money supplied through the US Embassy in Skopje, FOSIM openly supports radical and often violent Soros activists. Under the outgoing US administration, the Soros foundation was selected by the US Embassy as the main implementer of USAID and US Government projects in Macedonia. The Soros Foundation and Open Society Institute are notoriously disruptive and seek to impose the radical policies of their multi-billionaire founder on new democracies. The result has been political violence against Macedonian police and ugly, violent riots in many Macedonian towns”, said the proclamation, which was read in front of Trump Tower.
The participants at the rally pledged that Macedonia will work for continuing the strong friendship between Macedonia and the United States, but called on the new administration to end the interference and partisan approach of the US Embassy in Macedonian political affairs. After gathering in front of Trump Tower, protesters also marched along the New York city streets, toward the Fox News offices, where they again read their demands.
The reason for the protests are the media and civil society development programs which are supported by USAID Macedonia, a large number of which were subcontracted through the Soros Foundation in Macedonia, often to the tune of millions of dollars per project. The group of Macedonians gathered in front of Trump Tower said that the Soros Foundation in Macedonia coordinates its activities with political parties, helped cause a major political crisis in the country and organized violent protests in which dozens of officers were injured at a time when the police was needed to protect the southern border during the peak of the migrant crisis.
“We are standing here to support the Macedonian independence, NATO membership and territorial integrity of the Republic of Macedonia,
including the strong friendship with the United States of America. Thank you President Trump. God bless Macedonia and God bless the
United States of America”, the letter concludes.
Trump is due to be inaugurated on January 20th, and the President elect has himself expressed strong criticism of the role George Soros has played in politics. The left wing billionaire currency speculator has funded political organizations and parties in both the United States and Europe. His organization has been active in Macedonia since the early 1990ies, and was often strongly criticized by conservative parties who blame it for its partisanship.
